2,890 Variations for Every Heart: An Unforgettable Night with Yunchan Lim

Finally was able to do a quick concert trip before my next visit in couple of weeks. I had the chance to see Yunchan Lim perform Bach’s Goldberg Variations. In each concert, he lays out different variations, as if I am attending a concert that has never been played before, and that is quite exciting. He played with such empathy and humility, pouring his heart into every note. I was tearing up, thinking, This is crazy. Really insane. I finally heard every variation. It took a while, but it paid off. Variation 15 was too painful to hear at first, with the delayed reaction, so I teared up during the French overture. Then there are 25&29. I am still looking for a word. He probably played all 2,890 goldberg variations for each individual audience last night. Uniquely personal and deeply connected. And that is truly beautiful. It’s a moment I’ve engraved in myself to revisit whenever I need it. It was a perfect harmony between Bach, the pianist and the audience.
